It will be two years this coming October that

I started this site about the great music

history of El Paso - Past & Present. It has

been an inspiration and dream to bring

together, once again, some of the actual

groups that many of us remember from the

60's and 70's. On October 16, 2009, El Paso

will have the opportunity to see this musical

reunion. The Lancers East will be the site

where ten of El Paso's most popular rock

and folk/rock groups will perform. There

will be 600 tickets available. Advance reser-

This was the first place that our Sounds Royale Show played on the

road. It was a two week gig, as I recall - at Christmas time, 1973.

The name of the room was The Happenstance Showplace

and the group that had just finished playing there was

some of our old friends that we got to know in El Paso - the

Stewart Little. This was a three to four month

line up for the Happenstance - Hyatt Regency, San

Francisco in 1973. This was the Sounds Royale

first official (on the road) job - a great show room.

The Sounds Royale Show had really nice memories of this

show room. It was right by Anaheim Stadium. The most

memorable event that happened there was the night Debbie

was being featured on Jesus Christ Superstar's (I Don't Know

How to Love Him) You have to picture this - there's a pin spot

shining right on Debbie (while sitting on a tall stool). You could hear

a pin drop - she really had the crowd right where she wanted. Then

as we begin our crescendo for the big ending, we hear a loud

commotion coming from the entrance to the room. It was two

guys and a girl totally nude (streaking across the room). Needless

to say, we didn't finish the song. In fact, we said please stick around.....

we'll be back in fifteen with a new show.

We never saw the streakers again...

at the Sahara. Michael Jackson was 16.

I couldn't shoot with flash and there was

obviously lots of movement - so this was

about the best quality I was able to get.

Sahara for one of the six weeks we were there.

We had a great time with them and I must say

they were one of the most cordial and out going

of all of the 'big names' we got to know on the road.

doubt, one of the best vocal show groups

in the 70's. Our group was asked by CP

to perform with them in Winnipeg, Manitoba

just a few months after meeting them in

Lake Tahoe. We were at the Sahara and they

were performing at Harrahs, across the street.

El Paso's Howard Steele (who was the Studio Engineer for

Phil Spector (famous for his Wall of Sound, The Ronettes,

and many other famous groups) invited my wife and I to

watch drummer - Jeff Porcaro lay down a drum track for

a cut on a Diana Ross song for her new album. It was a

phenomenal experience watching Jeff and these producers

at work. The picture above was the only one I shot inside

Phil's studio. They are gold records that had been produced

by them to include the works of: Ringo Starr, Leo Sayer,

Rita Coolidge and Diana Ross. I included a YouTube video

of Jeff recording Live with Toto in the studio. You can view it

at the bottom of the last post. For all of you drummers, there

are many YouTube videos of Jeff giving drum lessons and

live concert performances with Toto (Africa and Rosanna)

Mike Stone was Phil Spector's (famous record

producer) body-guard. See the You-Tube Story

about Mike and Priscilla Presley in the right margin.

These pictures were shot after one of our Tapestry

performances in LA. Mike was dating Wony at the time.

She was the drummer of an all girl group called "The

Dae Han Sisters." Our group alternated shows with

Texas? Her only living relative from El Paso (an uncle),

had passed away right before this picture was shot.

One of El Paso's Best - Sonny Melendrez

is one of the best DJ's to ever talk on the air-waves.

He left El Paso quite a few years ago to go to Los Angeles.

He worked at KTLA radio. My wife and I would listen to

him on the radio while driving home from my gigs in the

early A.M. hours. He later went on to work for Disney

and had a show called "You and Me Kid" We have a fond

memory of him coming to El Paso to Bassett Center and

brought Mickey & Minnie with him. He took our son

up on stage with him. He was only about 6 months at

the time - he's almost 25 now! Yeow!! Sonny is currently

living in San Antonio and has been an inspiration and

Balmorhea was asked to do the sound track

for George Berman's movie "Dog Pound" to

be released in the spring. He had seen them

perform two concerts in France during their

recent European tour. We went to Austin to

see Nicole and the group lay down tracks.

The technology has really improved compared

to what we used back in the 70's.

The Urge is one of the best cover bands in

the business. They are from Ireland and

have become very good friends of mine.

I first met Sean McGeeney (bass, vocals)

in 2008 when my El Paso musician friend

Bobby Napier introduced me to him. They

had, just a few years before, played together

at the Cork Opera House when Bobby was

playing violin with Tammy Wynette. Sean

and the boys in his group called me in El

Paso the day we were setting up for the

Oct. 16, Border Legends Concert. They

were playing live at one of their shows and

wanted to wish us well on our big night.

I transfered the "shout out" to a tape

and played it for the musicians during

our wrap-up meeting for the show.

will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

There was a memorial for Bill at Patty's home

on Jan. 30, 2010.

We watched a slide presentation of

Bill and his life while Gary Hollis and

Buddy Winston played beautiful guitar

music in the background.

Patty & Rick teamed up and did an hour on the Leon

Metz Show on Oct. 3, 2009. We talked about the up-

coming Border Legends Concert, played some great

music that will be represented in the concert and

promoted Patty's new CD project - The Kitchen

Project. Leon and Jackson are always great to

work with and we so much apprecaite their interest

in supporting our passion for live music in El Paso.

Mike Zeoli - someone that was passing by

while I was shooting this picture said "Now

there's a legendary picture!" - the drummer

for the Bobby Fuller Four and one of the

finest drummers in the business, Mike Zeoli.

Dalton had seen Del Castillo a few weeks

before at Music Under the Stars and said

"I will be there to see them again on my

birthday" We all had a blast at Dalton's

birthday party.

benefit the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation. The

CD is featuring many talented musicians. I have

heard some of the cuts and am very pleased and

excited to have my own copy. The producer is Eric

Bozeman. He is a world-class drummer and

studio engineer/producer. I will post more on

the CD when it becomes available.

the El Paso musicians love these guys. They

are some of the most dedicated and top notch

showmen in the business!

band I have been raving about for the last year.

He's planning on seeing them again in August.

On July 12, 2009 El Paso feasted their eyes

and ears on one of the finest groups in the business!

Del Castillo has appeared numerous times in El

Paso with sold out houses every time they appear.

It was my wife's idea to have them appear at

Music Under the Stars. I got in touch with their

agent, sent an application, and let the MUTS

committee take it from there. They were chosen

to play this year and we are ecstatic about the

response they received. This was a crowd of

more than 12,000 people and their largest audience

ever. We just knew that this group was perfect

for El Paso - and El Paso for them!

for the Clark County Express. They are a dynamite group from

Pine Top Arizona. Dart is the General Manager for the El Paso

Generals Indoor Football Team. In a recent meeting with Dart

we determined that we both had a common interest - performing

live music. He and his wife, Terri, are in El Paso for the time

being but may eventually make El Paso their new home. Get

first "El Paso's Got Talent" competition. He's

one fine writer, singer/guitar playin musician.

I met Tim when he asked me to be a part of the

Billy Wilson Tribute Concert a few months ago.

Dalton Powell told me that Tim was absolutely

one of his favorites to play with and I certainly

agree. He's a real pro that draws the listener

and fellow players to him. There are a lot of

good musicians out there but Tim is one of those

real special ones and I do hope him the very best

in the "America's Got Talent" competition. Go

get 'em, Tim! El Paso's proud of you!

UTEP Theater never fails to put on a great show!

8-Track "The Sounds of the 70's" produced and

directed by Gregory L. Taylor, really hit it out of

the park on this one. The show had great songs

and choreography along with great musicians.

The band consisted of: Patricia Ann Provencio-

piano and conductor, Guitar-Adrian Esparza, Curt

Bushaw-bass, Cassie Hammond-trombone,

Thomas Schadle, Carlos Colon-reeds, Tom Tumczuk-

drums, and Mariana Aun-percussion.

The cast consisted of Ivan Cano, Justin Cardenas,

Tanisha Lewis, Christie Murphy, Jorge Ollivier,

Rebecca Rivas, Troy Taylor and Marissa Trujillo.

The voices were strong and very entertaining.

Get your reservations as soon as possible because

this show is going to sell out at just about every

performance. There is a possibility that it will be

Doug Pullen has provided us with some great musician/song

writing history about one of El Paso's own Clinton Ballard

that passed away on Dec. 23, 2008 in Denton Texas. Clinton

wrote more than 550 songs and musicials in his carreer.

Many notables such as Rick Nelson, Connie Francis, the Hollies

and the Zombies, to name a few, recorded his songs.

Billy Wilson, long time drummer, lost his

battle to pancreatic cancer. He attended

our Border Legends Jam on Oct. 2 and

looked great. It was just a few weeks later

that we learned about his bout with this

audience in a much better place...

This was the first time we had played this song together

nice plaque and a picture of him and Peggy Sue

(of the Buddy Holley era) - taken at the recent

Tribute to Norman Petty in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

We Love You Danny! We ended his Tribute with

the phrase he always used with the customers -

This is the first time Ron and I have seen

each other in probably 35 years - since Ron

moved to Albuquerque. We use to play racquet-

ball together back in the days when we both

were in better shape and also were playing in

our own separate bands in El Paso. My wife

and I had the best time spending the weekend

with Ron at his sister's house in Ruidoso this

weekend. This picture was taken right before

we went in to see Randy Jones playing with

the Flying J Wranglers - an event my wife and

I have been doing annualy for 26 years.

David Bigham was the founder of the group "The Roses"

They were the back up voices of Buddy Holly in the 50's.

I first met David Bigham at the Tribute to Norman Petty

in Ruidoso. He was one of the panelists that spoke with

us and had some very interesting things to say about

his experiences with Norman Petty and Buddy Holly.
